The terrace, one of the best spots of Vietnam Discovery
Last year opened a Vietnamese restaurant in Loreto street in the Bellavista neighborhood. It’s quite small, which means that only 2 to 3 people coult eat at the same time at the small bamboo bar beside the cash desk facing the kitchen. The majority of the customers ordered delivery to their homes.
Curious about new tastes, I felt adventurous and ordered “Súp phó Bò", a typical Vietnamese soup with species, meat, onion and cilantro. Delicious, however, feeling a bit too adventurous I added to much of a sauce they left me on the table and which I didn’t taste before adding to my soup…it was sweet with a taste of honey and hot. Not being used to intense sweet-and-sour tastes, I suffered through the soup waiting for my fish with ginger accompanied by jasmine rice. The fish amazed me. Excellently prepared, very tasty and of a perfect texture. However, the rice was sweet like a desert, so I couldn’t eat it.
For all this including something to drink I paid $7.000, which I thought was quite decent, considering the type of food and its preparation. A couple of months later I found out that this place is the only Vietnamese place in Santiago, and that people from the entire city order food there.
I’m talking about the now become popular Vietnam Discovery which last year (2010) won the first Wikén prize, awarded by El Mercurio for the “Best Restaurant Price/Quality”. One year after its inauguration, behind the small bamboo bar with the cash desk they exceeded the place and now it even has a terrace with live music. How cool is that?
Sophisticated, big, with a good bar and of course delicious food, the Vietnam Discovery has turned into a popular place to gather for people from entire Santiago.
I’d say that on average customers spend $13.000 CLP per person including a desert and the terrace with live music on Tuesdays is the ultimate in luxury.
You need to be ready for new tastes, although it took me a while to get used to the sweet mixed with salty, this can turn into an addiction when approached with an open mind.
