The dish that this excellent restaurant in Providencia is named after: Pad Thai.
While walking with some friends in the Providencia area, we got hungry. Thinking of what we wanted to eat, we came to a conclusion from our tongues´ memories, guiding us to complex and intense flavors. So, we decided on Thai food.
And just where are Thai restaurants? We figured the majority were close to the Las Condes area —the "high class" part of the city— but we were in a "lower" area, close to the Manuel Montt metro station; and we didn´t want to empty our pockets for an Asian craving, so we began the search.
Fortunately, we quickly came across someone who knew the area and told us where to go. On Manuel Montt Avenue, close to corner of 11 de Septiembre Street, there is a place that seems somewhat hidden. Next to a big Mexican restaurant on the corner, there is a small entrance with some signs, not even hung, but on the ground leaning against the wall, saying "Pad Thai".
We went inside…with the humble signs, we were not anticipating the elegant restaurant in which we sat down to eat one of the best ceviches that I´ve had in a long time.
Just as the word "elegant" implies, Pad Thai has simplicity, nobility and grace, and is equipped with a number of tables perfect for its size — but as it´s popular, it´s better to make a reservation. Subtly and naturally decorated, this restaurant has everything it takes to be one of the capital´s best.
The service is fast and attentive, the food is excellent and affordable — the shrimp ceviche I had, which is considered a starter, was $3,900 CLP, and their Curry with three spicy levels from which to chose, is MORE than satisfying, and around $6,000 CLP. Plus, the place is well heated and really cozy.
They also have drinks and deserts, sophisticated preparations such as the Thai Pisco Sour with coconut milk, garlic and basil or ginger, specials meant to beat the cold; and although none of us tried dessert, the table beside us had a chocolate-looking something that looked marvelous…next time.
Now you know, it´s at Manuel Montt, and though it´s not cheap, considering the food´s quality and its quite convenient space, heated with good service, the next time you want Thai food, go to Pad Thai.
