We know that there´s a time and a place for everyone—cheaper places, with better or worse service, more beautiful places, less fixed-up, etc. To each his own, and depending on our pockets and mood, we pick a place to go.

What we give you today is one of those good places, good for those whose pocket is more or less full of lukas; but we assure you, you´ll like it.

Catedral, a bar located literally above the exclusive restaurant Opera, on the corner of José Miguesl de la Barra and Merced.

I had been there a few times shortly after its opening a few years ago, but never any more. Despite being a little "cuico" (a Chilean term for rich, young kids who are somewhat snobby), leaving prejudice aside, this is an excellent place to go eat, drink, dance and converse. It´s the kind of place intended for the "young adult" with a well-paid job, because although the prices are quite affordable, they´re far from cheap, but, all with good reason: The food and service is top and they have excellent musical tastes (in my subjective criterion.)

The space is divided into three sections, among which is a bar, a table area and a second floor with more tables and a terrace, special for those summer nights not too far out of sight.

I have been to the "Catedral en Coma" sessions, which they do every week, dancing like an animal to incredible live bands; and I´ve been there just sitting at a table with a drink to accompany conversation. Depending on the day and time you go, Catedral is perfect for all occasions.

I recommend you go around 9 or 10 p.m. to relax with a drink, and if you´d like, stay to see a live band, which generally go on around 11 p.m. This Tuesday, 27 September, one of the folklore singers from "Las Primas" will be playing, and Friday, 30, "Los Petinellis," one of the excellent Chilean musicians, Alvaro Henríquez´s bands.

If you want to make it complete, go Friday, 30 (when Petinellis plays), freshly paid, arrive early, eat the Congrio with shrimp or the pork fillet with mote (boiled wheat) risotto⎯I recommend both with all my heart, or my tongue I should say⎯have a drink and stay to dance until the candles burn out, because after the band, there´s always a party.
