A bird's eye view of Santiago's Parque O'Higgins.

A bird's eye view of Santiago's Parque O'Higgins.

Santiago is absolutely full of parks and plazas, ranging from quite large to rather small areas. No matter the size though, it seems you're always nearby a nice place to sit and enjoy the moment.

One of the more well-known parks here is Parque O'Higgins, which houses music venues, an amusement park and ample green space for athletes, dog walkers, young lovers...

Officially inaugurated in 1873, the park was first known as "Parque Cousiño,"  and in 1972, was renamed  "Parque O'Higgins," the city's authentic "green lung." From there came various attractions such as Fantasilandia, the country's main amusement park; and in 2006, the Movistar Arena's famous dome came to life, South America's largest multi-purpose stadium. Here is where hundreds of big names come to entertain the capital, such as Jamiroquai this past 29 April, 2011.

Located right by the Parque O'Higgins metro station, there is always something going on at this park. And you can guarantee that there will also always be sopaipilla and completo vendors, along with people selling paraphernalia of whatever event is happening that night.

Many people disregard this park due to being in a "rougher" area, more known as a place for flaites unless a major star is coming. However, I urge you to disregard such disregard and go see it for yourself some afternoon, have a nice picnic and enjoy this lovely Santiago spring in a lovely Santiago park.
