With a bunch of cars looking as if they had crashed into the front yard, you really can´t miss Santiago´s Museo de la Moda (Museum of Fashion.)
This place truly is unique and as The New York Times claims, "it´s one of the most remarkable cultural spaces that has opened in recent years."
The idea began in 1999, when Jorge Yarur Bascuñán decided to turn his parents´ land and house in Vitacura into a museum. At first, the museum was to be much simpler, a place to show his family collection of clothing; but then the idea got bigger, and ended up in a general collection of more than 8,000 pieces, and rotating exhibits.
Their current exhibit is dedicated to all things 80´s. "Back to the 80's," now in part two, is highly focused around the classic, Back to the Future, with the original DeLorean in which Marty McFly travels through time on display. There are also pieces from fashion icons of the time, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger´s leather jacket from Terminator 1.
I´ll never forget when the Michael Jackson exhibit came in 2009. Massively popular among Chileans, thousands came to the museum to see Jackson´s personal belongings, including the ever-so-famous white glove. It was featured in all forms of media, and that´s how I learned about this wonderful museum.
Apart from John Lennon jackets and other glamorous pieces, the museum also has a library, where one has access to information related to fashion and textiles. Containing more than 5,000 books, they also have posters, photos and audiovisual pieces. And finally, there´s the funky Garage Cafe and Store which sells merchandise related to the current exhibit, is a space for young Chilean designers and of course, has "homemade gourmet" food.
It´s really a fun thing to do when you find a hole in your schedule. You can either meander around or sign up for a guided tour and delve into the wonderful world of fashion!
