Last time I met my sister (13) she told me about the “behind the scenes” of the reality show “40 o 20” (40 or 20). Not watching TV at all, I wondered why women like this type of program so much.
Surfing on Facebook today, the first thing I saw was a long thread of comments on a friend’s wall about the happy ending of a reality show :"Este si que es beso","Ella se ve media arisca... no le creo!", "Pobre joshe", más fome los besos!... Si tienes al Joche al frente, le darías un beso tan cartucho?!", etc., etc., etc. (“That one for sure was a kiss”, “She gets pretty upset…I don’t believe it!”, “Poor joshe, very boring the kisses”…if you have Joche in front of you, would you give him such a shy kiss?!” etc. etc. etc.) It seems as a majority of Chilean TV spectators last night watched the expected ending of the reality show similar to “I Love New York”, however, more modest, with some male stars who don’t shine that much anymore and some unknown people “fighting” for the love of a woman. And there I was, asking myself the same thing again.
In the end, everything is a lie. If everybody wants that Dominique (the main character of the show) stays with “Joshe” (the winner), the producers will do it that way or in case they are planning a second part of the show similar to a soap opera, Dominique will stay with the “wrong one” (the one the audience didn’t want) to realize later that she had been wrong.
It’s interesting the way some people follow these shows and think it’s real, such as my poor mother who stated concerning my sister’s comments: “Yes, she will stay with Joshe, but I’m sure that outside she will still meet up with Bernardo”. “Mom! This is fake! There’s not such a thing like ‘outside’ or ‘reality’. It’s a TV program for good’s sake!”
And so there are thousands of fascinated people in front of the TV who follow the life of others, who is falling in and out of love, who is getting a cold and who is getting better, only thinking of with whom the famous Dominique will stay in the end or who will be eliminated this time.
I think it’s a very interesting phenomenon, the response as well as advertising strategy. What do you think?
