Roberto Matta.

Roberto Matta.

Roberto Matta was a wise and mystical personality. I don’t know if you had the chance to watch the documentary that was on TV last Sunday (6th November 2011), where through the artist’s and his son’s descriptions it was possible to feel the spirituality that surrounded his world and work.

For someone who gets to know Matta’s work with an open mind as well as also for those who know how to interpret the visual work, these metaphysical ideas may be clear prints, however, for mere mortals who admire the colorful and great work of this painter just like children do in front of a incomprehensible canvas, it might not be all that evident. That’s why I’m referring to the documentary which makes it easier to approach the artist’s inspirational world.

Well, this year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Matta’s birth and various activities and expositions have been organized in relation to this, the documentary shown on free TV being part of this celebration. One of the expositions is carried-out by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Art), starting today with the title “Matta Cien! (“Matta One Hundred”) exhibiting paintings of various materials, such as earth, plaster and quicklime, as well as engravings, drawings, press documents and audiovisual material.

A highlight of this tribute exposition is the documentation of the artist’s trips to Chile between 1948 and 1972 after his emigration in 1934, and the first showing of a piece of work that Matta realized in 1971 called “Bolas de nieve” (“Snowballs”).

An excellent opportunity to get to know more or maybe for the first time one of the most emblematic artists of our country who was very involved with our history, a man of absolute freedom and social commitment who once said: “We live in an imposing world or in a sensual world”. The imposing world is a cage; the sensual one is an adventure”.

Great Matta!
