Las Brutas (1980) was one of the most warmly received dramatizations of 2011 by GAM. As part of its summer revision of the past season, the Gabriel Mistral center will present an interactive DVD based on this work (National Theater Prize 2011).
Originally created by Juan Radrigán, it narrates the story of a band of brothers, shepherds living in the precordillera nortina who, overwhelmed by isolation, frustration, and old age, decide to commit suicide after extermination of their flock.
Radrigán, inspired by a true story, articulated a contemporary tragedy that reflects solitude, marginality, exclusion, and social abandonment. This audiovisual work is one of the first examples of Interactive Multimedia Drama developed until now in the country. The initiative later arose, when given expressed authorization from Radrigán, with Rafael Díaz, a composer and ethnomusicologist of the Instituto de Música de la Universidad Católica. As the official "dramaturgist" of the project, he composed his music and translated the script to a virtual 3D platform.
This virtual platform is made up of drawings, photographs, mobile illustrations, and intertwining watercolors (all of this is the job of a theatrical design team specializing in digital techniques). The resulting work is an example of the pioneering of music-theater in that the spectator is able to opt between two routes of navigation: one straight, so that Radrigán's drama follows a logical path (using the left timeline arrow), while the other is at random. The user will choose his/her own navigation route, configuring a circular story-line in which the beginning and end could come at any point of the montage.
After the presentation of Las Brutas, images of the work with be projected and a space for dialogue with the author for those who would like to join the forum will be established. The assistants will receive a copy of the DVD as a gift.
