Yesterday, with an excellent organization and lots of good energy, took place the awaited first Red Bull Soapbox Race in Chile, the race where participants have to build their own soapboxes and which has already been realized in over 30 countries.
50,000 spectators, 68 teams and a lot of laughter were the building blocks of the race that ended with the very handsome team "Llegó el Lechero" ("The milk man has arrived") winning a trip to the Dakar Rally in 2012 in Lima.
Entrance was free and the spectators behaved quite well during the race. Apart from some soapboxes that fell apart half-way and didn't make it to the end, the event was carried-out normally and no major accidents have been reported.
One of the event's surprises was the performance of the Argentinian acrobat Hernán Pitocco, who surprised the audience with his pirouettes high up in the air and close to the runway. Julián Elfenbein and Francisco Kaminski were the animators in charge and the jury was made up by Catalina Pulido, Miss Universe Chile Vanessa Ceruti, actor Álvaro Gómez and the national rally pilot Chaleco López who stated: "It was very difficult to find the winning team as all the teams have worked very hard to build their soapboxes and realize their performances, however, "Llegó el Lechero" was the best competitor of the day as their performance was very creative and they absolutely deserve the award".
In general, the performances before hitting the runway were not as creative as the construction of the soapboxes, however, teams like "Papa Movil" and "Guanaco de Carabineros" ("Guanaco of the Police") or "La Fonda de Tatán" - who won the award for creativity - were quite entertaining.
An excellent event for the entire family which hopefully will be repeated next year in Chile.
